Late Renaissance and Baroque Christian Engagement with The Qur’an

28 January 2018 16:00 to 19:30

The Khalidi Library (Annex), 129 Bab El-Silsilah Road, The Old City

This lecture by Professor Paul Shore (University of Regina, Saskatchewan) will examine several Latin translations of the Qur’an made between 1500 and 1750 from two perspectives: i) translations having a wide impact on European Christian perceptions of the Qur’an and of Islam generally, and ii) as examples of translations exhibiting breakthroughs or advances in understanding of Qur’anic Arabic and the meaning of the Qur’an. Professor Shore will be introduced by Dr Khader Salameh of the Khalidi Library, who will show some of the rare Qur’ans held at the Library. The lecture will be in English only, there will be no translation.
