CBRL's 2019 Travel Grant Appeal

CBRL's 2019 Travel Grant Appeal

In 2018, thanks to your generous donations we were able to support two postgraduate students with travel grants to undertake fieldwork in the Levant. We would like to thank you, our members and friends, for supporting our work to develop the next generation of researchers working in this fascinating region. Once again, we need your help to continue this important scheme in 2019.

Melissa Gatter, PhD candidate in Middle Eastern Studies, University of Cambridge

Syrian heritage and time in Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan, 2018

"The CBRL travel grant enabled me, not only to access Syrians living in Azraq camp, but to carry out  fieldwork for a longer duration, allowing me to develop genuine relationships with refugees so that  my research reflects their reality and brings much needed attention to this under-researched community."

Lamia Sassine, PhD candidate in archaeology, University of Sheffield

Elusive Phoenicians: perceptions of Phoenician identity and material culture as reflected in museum records and displays, 2018

“The CBRL Sam Lieu Travel Grant has been of invaluable help in funding my fieldwork in five museums between Lebanon and Cyprus. It has allowed me to gather indispensable data and information to complete a comparative assessment of perceptions of Phoenician collections in museum displays.”

By supporting young researchers with a travel grant of up to £800 we can offer students the opportunity to gain practical experience of fieldwork investigation, develop specific research interest in the region and to meet a variety of active researchers.

We are now seeking funds to continue the CBRL Travel Grant scheme in 2019. Our target is to fund five young researchers and to do this, we need to raise £4,000. Please consider donating to our 2019 travel grant appeal, donations of all sizes are essential and will be gratefully received.

It's easy to donate online here. If you would like to make a donation by post, please send a cheque made out to the ‘Council for British Research in the Levant’, or by completing and returning the form that can be downloaded here. To gift-aid a postal donation, please complete and return the gift-aid declaration in section 2 of this form. Please return all postal donations to: CBRL, 10 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AH.

If you are a UK tax payer, you will be eligible to gift-aid your donation, allowing CBRL to benefit from a further 25% of the value of your donation. If you would like to fund the full value of a travel grant with a donation of £800, we would be delighted to name this scholarship as you would wish.

If you wish to know more, please contact CBRL’s Development Officer, Maggie McNulty by phone on 0207 969 5330 or email or please feel free to contact any of our Trustees.
