CBRL Travel Grant Campaign 2019: support the next generation of scholars working on the Levant

In 2018, thanks to the generous donations of friends and members, CBRL funded travel grants to support the research of two postgraduate students; Lamia Sassine, PhD candidate in archaeology at the University of Sheffield and Melissa Gatter, PhD candidate in Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cambridge.

You can read more about Melissa’s fieldwork and research in her blog post here. Melissa's ethnographic fieldwork explores aspects of time and nostalgia in Azraq refugee camp for Syrians in Jordan:

"The CBRL travel grant enabled me not only to  access Syrians living in Azraq camp, but to carry out  fieldwork for a longer duration, allowing me to develop genuine relationships with refugees so that  my research reflects their reality and brings much needed attention to this under-researched community."

Each year, CBRL awards postgraduate travel grants to develop the next generation of researchers undertaking valuable research in the Levant.

By supporting young researchers with a travel grant of up to £800 we can offer students the opportunity to gain practical experience of fieldwork investigation, develop specific research interest in the region and to meet a variety of active researchers.

Restrictions to CBRL’s British Academy core funding mean that it cannot be used towards postgraduate projects. Instead, CBRL continues this important part of its activity thanks to the generosity of our members and friends.

If you would like to make a donation online to support CBRL’s 2019 travel grant campaign, please do so here.

If you would like to make a donation by post, please send a cheque made out to the ‘Council for British Research in the Levant’, or by completing and returning the form that can be downloaded here. To gift-aid a postal donation, please complete and return the gift-aid declaration in section 2 of this form. Please return all postal donations to: CBRL, 10 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AH.

If you would like to fund the full value of a travel grant with a donation of £800, we would be delighted to name this scholarship as you would wish.
