CBRL’s British Institute in Amman

The Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL) in Amman is a branch of a UK registered charity based at the British Academy in London. In Jordan, CBRL is registered with the Ministry of Culture and holds formal ties with the Royal Scientific Society.

The CBRL in Amman (also locally known as the British Institute in Amman) offers support, advice and facilities to visiting and local academic researchers. It has a library that is open to the public, and organizes events and activities gauged at a range of audiences. There is an archaeological laboratory with reference collections, administrative offices and meeting rooms. Current staff include a Director, Assistant Director, Executive Administrator, Librarian, Accounting/Admin Assistant, Caretaker, and House-keeper. The BIA also hosts visiting post-doctoral and doctoral researchers.



Job Title: CBRL’s British Institute in Amman Accounting & Administrative Assistant

Location: Amman, near to the University of Jordan

The CBRL in Amman seeks a dynamic, flexible and highly competent individual to play an important role in our organisation's current configuration and future development at an exciting time in our long history. A one-year-contract is offered in the first instance, with the possibility of extension. The post is offered on condition of successful completion of a three-month probation period.

Job Summary: The Accounting & Administrative Assistant manages the financial affairs of CBRL’s British Institute in Amman under the supervision of CBRL management staff in Amman and London. Depending on the experience of the successful candidate, training may be offered as part of the employment package.

Hours of Work: 8am - 5pm with a lunch break 

Accountable to: The British Institute in Amman Executive Administrator and then the Director in Amman and the CBRL’s UK Executive Officer in London.

The covering letter should explain in no more than two sides of A4 why you meet the person specification and key competencies required. Main duties of the role:

  • Maintaining and keeping up to date the CBRL financial reporting system (Quickbooks)
  • Official letter writing in Arabic and English
  • Assisting with front of house duties and other tasks with the role as required, including bookings
  • Maintaining the local staff payroll with the assistance of the auditors
  • Processing regular purchases and payments
  • Issuing invoices and receiving payments
  • Maintaining a petty cash float
  • Reconciling accounts
  • Preparing financial reports and annual summary accounts
  • Working to maintain with the Executive Administrator financial and administrative relationships and responsibilities with Jordanian social security, the tax office, the Ministry of Culture, and the bank
  • Providing all necessary information during internal and external audit processes as may be required by the auditors
  • Filing correspondence & keeping good records

The Accounting & Administrative Assistant works with all members of CBRL staff and most closely with the Executive Administrator, as well as the Director and Assistant Director

Education & Experience

  • BSc in Accounting with a GPA not less than 3.25.
  • At least one year’s employment in an accounting role.

Essential Criteria

  • Fluent Arabic, and an excellent knowledge of English, IELTS. Band 8 and above, spoken and written.
  • Excellent knowledge of Excel and Word.
  • A good sense of reading numbers and excellent accuracy skills.
  • Experience working with Quickbooks and Menalite / Menaitech software.
  • Professionalism, honesty and confidentiality in all matters.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritise.
  • Ability to work in a team.


Desirable Criteria

  • Familiarity with online banking.
  • Knowledge of ReceiptBank.
  • Experience working with an NGO, university or in the charities sector.
  • An interest in education and/or cultural heritage.
