Our funders

CBRL is one of the British International Research Institutes (BIRI), a network of eight international research organisations covering the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and southern Europe, Africa, Turkey, the Middle East, Iran and Central Asia.

The British Academy is our main funder. Funding also comes from where we partner on projects, including most recently, the Newton Fund, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), and the British Council, specifically the Cultural Protection Fund, an initiative of the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS). Other income comes from membership subscriptions, donations, grants, and charges for our facilities and services. We have also received additional funds from the British Academy for specific initiatives in the past.

Our members also provide an essential flow of income and support. Their contributions are particularly important in supporting younger scholars to conduct new rigorous research, and in strengthening collaboration between the UK and the Levant. The sales of our publications, books and journals all provide some funding, although most of this is used directly on publication costs. Our two institutes in Amman and Jerusalem receive income through their services, including serving as venues for workshops and meetings, accommodation (at the Kenyon Institute), and providing workspace. Some additional revenue is obtained from occasional consultancy fees and direct contributions for services by larger research projects.

We are also grateful for the funding we receive from charitable bodies. The AlTajir Trust and Barakat Trust have provided long-term funding that supports the library at our Kenyon Institute.
