Project Awards & Affiliation

Pilot Study Awards:

Project Awards

These enable postdoctoral scholars to undertake initial exploratory work or a feasibility study prior to making applications for major funding to a Research Council, the British Academy or another body.  Awards may be used to cover travel, round tables, seminars, or initial exploratory fieldwork and research. In addition, CBRL may assist such feasibility studies through the provision of its facilities and in establishing local contacts. To be eligible under this scheme, a project must involve an element of travel to (or from) the Middle East. Number of awards vary, offered annually; value up to £7,500.  Applicants must be postdoctoral scholars ordinarily resident in the UK. Funded project applications are not currently open for applications - the funding call will open in October. Call for project affiliation is open year-round.

Applications are now closed.

Team-based Fieldwork Research Awards:

The Council for British Research in the Levant is inviting applications for proposals related to team-based fieldwork within the Levant. CBRL has a strong record of team-based fieldwork research and wishes to maintain UK engagement and expertise. Applications should be for strategic projects that will enhance the profile of UK research in the Levant, and which offer the support and commitment of the applicant’s own institution. We also encourage applicants to work to develop sustainable collaborations with local institutions. Projects should provide research/publication opportunities for developing researchers and therefore help to develop the regional knowledge and skills-base required to allow research in the region to continue beyond the current generation. Awards will normally be up to £5,000.
Applications are now closed.

Project awarsaProject Completion Awards:

CBRL has a policy of assisting the completion of research projects, including a small number of projects inherited from its predecessors, the BSAJ and BIAAH. In some cases this includes support for additional analytical work, in others for support to produce final publication manuscripts, to complete project archives, or to repatriate research materials to the appropriate authorities in the region. CBRL has limited funds available to help.

Applications are now closed.

Project Affiliation:

Project awardsProject affiliation provides a formal link with CBRL for projects that are not CBRL funded, but where our institutional support may be beneficial, or where affiliation may enhance the academic and research role of the project and CBRL. CBRL invites applications for project affiliation for postdoctoral research in the humanities and social sciences to be undertaken in the countries of the Levant. All applications should clearly demonstrate that CBRL affiliation is sought for a clearly defined piece of research, which will have an identifiable outcome on completion. Please contact CBRL for further details.
