New Kashmir-Palestine Discussion Series at the Kenyon Institute
The Kenyon Institute will host a series of online and hybrid events this autumn that launch a new Kashmir and Palestine scholars’ network and conversation series.
The idea for the series emerged from a British Academy Knowledge Frontiers Seed Grant awarded to Kenyon Institute Director Toufic Haddad and Emma Brännlund from the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) in early 2020.
Their winning proposal argued that despite many obvious historical and contemporary commonalities between Kashmir and Palestine, opportunities for dialogue, networking and knowledge exchange between scholars was limited.
They proposed to address this gap by creating opportunities for networking and cross-fertilisation between scholars working on both areas, bringing these communities in conversation with one another and calling for the creation of a Kashmir-Palestine Scholars Solidarity Network.
After encountering significant delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the initiative finally seeks to publicly launch this October, creating a space where focused scholarly conversations on Kashmir and Palestine can take place.
Launch events for the network and accompanying ‘Kashmir-Palestine Conversations’ series will take place at the Kenyon Institute this Autumn and will be streamed online.
Dr Goldie Osuri from the University of Warwick, and one of the few scholars to have addressed Kashmir-Palestine linkages in her research, will give a keynote lecture on “Scholar-activist Solidarity: Building Alliances” on 24 October.
The Kashmir-Palestine Conversation series will begin the next day with a film screening of “Bring Him Back” (dir. Fahad Shah, 2015), followed by a discussion with Palestinian academic Suhad Daher-Nashif (Keele University) and filmmaker Talat Bhat.
Overall, the Conversation series will explore various intersections, as well as divergences, between Kashmir and Palestine, including those related to popular resistance, theories and practices of settler colonialism, the economics of occupation, and literature and poetry.
Each Conversation will feature presentations and discussions by Kashmir- and Palestine-engaged scholars, chaired by a discussant who works in a similar disciplinary field.
These discussions programmed on a monthly basis throughout Autumn 2022, aim to draw deeper awareness and understanding within and between scholarly communities, serving as a basis for long-term network creation, knowledge production and exchange.
