The twenty-fifth Annual General Meeting of the Council for British Research in the Levant will be held on Wednesday 13 December 2023 at 5.30 pm.  Members are invited to join the meeting, in person, at the Royal Asiatic Society, or online.  The AGM will be followed by the AGM lecture, which will also be set up as a hybrid event.

The purpose of the AGM is to present the Trustee Annual Report and Accounts, conduct elections, give an opportunity for members to hear about CBRL activities and to ask questions. The AGM notice can be downloaded here.

All current members have been sent a copy of the AGM notice, Trustee Annual Report and Accounts and nomination form if there are suggestions for new trustees from members. We are delighted to have Professor Jean-Pierre Filiu present this year’s AGM Lecture, Gaza, The Key to Peace in the Middle East.

Jean-Pierre Filiu is Professor of Middle East Studies at Sciences Po, Paris. A historian and an Arabist, he has also held visiting professorships at the universities of Columbia and Georgetown. Hurst and Oxford University Press published his “Arab Revolution” in 2011, “Gaza, a History in 2014 (MEMO Book Award) and “From Deep State to Islamic State” in 2015, after University of California Press had published in 2011 his award-winning “Apocalypse in Islam”. His “Middle East, a political history, from 395 to the present” has just been out with Polity. His books have been translated in more than fifteen languages, including Arabic and Turkish.

The lecture will be presented online and in person with the speaker talking online in front of a live audience.
