We are pleased to announce that submissions for the 2021 Best Article Prize for CBRL’s international peer-reviewed journal Contemporary Levant are now open.

The award recognises excellent research and scholarship that engages with current and emerging issues in the Levant to advance our understanding of the region. For more information about the aims and scope of the journal please see here. For articles not intended as competition entries, a rolling submissions system is in place throughout the year.

A committee from CBRL and the editorial board of Contemporary Levant will select the best article from submissions which will be published in Contemporary Levant in autumn 2021. The prize winner will receive a one-year membership to CBRL and online access to Contemporary Levant for one year. They will also be presented with a certificate of recognition at the CBRL annual general meeting.

Eligibility

This is an open call. We are looking for original unpublished articles from scholars at any stage in their careers and from different disciplines across the humanities and social sciences (including, but not restricted to: anthropology, sociology, politics, religion and theology, language and linguistics, cultural studies, modern history, social geography, media, film studies and literature).

Last year’s winning articles, “Petitioning for Palestine: refugee appeals to international authorities” by Anne Irfan and “Thirsty water carriers: the production of uneven waterscapes in Sahl al-Battuf ” by Muna Dajani are currently available to download free of charge.

Submission

Articles between 7,000 and 9,000 words (including abstract and footnotes) should be submitted as an electronic version to Dr Peter Cherry. The Contemporary Levant style guide can be found here.

The deadline for submissions is midnight on 18 June 2021.
