Call for nominations

We are pleased to announce the CBRL undergraduate dissertation* prizes in the field of Levantine studies (Jordan, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Cyprus) for the year 2022:

  • Levantine archaeology or history: the CBRL Prize for a final-year undergraduate dissertation or major research paper
  • Contemporary Levantine studies: the CBRL Prize for a final-year undergraduate dissertation or major research paper

*major final-year research papers are acceptable where there is no dissertation.

We invite UK-based heads of departments or chairs of departmental examination boards to nominateone final year dissertation in the above subject areas. Where a department covers the ancient and contemporary Levant, the department may enter one nomination for each prize.

The dissertation should be the best in the subject area (with a first-class mark); focus on a topic relating to Levantine studies, whether ancient or modern; make an original contribution to research debates; and be of excellent quality.

Prize: £250 for each winning dissertation, plus one-year membership of CBRL, including online access to either of CBRL’s journals, Levant or Contemporary Levant, and acknowledgement on the CBRL website.

Nomination procedure:

  • Summer 2022: nominations should be made by departmental academic staff at undergraduate exam boards. Examiners/supervisors should make a case for the nomination (on the nomination form); the student should be informed that their dissertation has been nominated for the prize; student contact details should be given on the form.
  • 1 August 2022: deadline for departments to send electronic PDF of nominated dissertations together with completed nomination form to: [email protected]
  • October 2022: students and departments informed of successful outcomes.
  • November 2022: CBRL Prize winners announced.
